An Independence Pass Engagement | Aspen Wedding Photographer

“If the photographer is interested in the people in front of his/her lens, and if he/she is compassionate, it’s already a lot. The instrument is not the camera but the photographer.”

- Eve Arnold

I came across the above quote on Instagram the other day and it really stuck with me. It’s so simple, yet it conveys so much truth. You could put the same couple at the same location in front of the lenses of a dozen photographers and without fail, each photographer will capture something entirely unique. I think that’s a really beautiful thing. When you hire a photographer to capture your engagement/wedding/family/etc., you’re not just hiring a body to point and shoot a nice camera. You’re hiring a human who comes into your shoot or wedding day with their own story, their own perspective, their own way of seeing the world. And when you hire a photographer who really and truly cares for the people they're photographing, that’s when the real magic unfolds.

Twin Lakes Engagement Session

A + C reached out about their wedding and I could immediately tell they were good people—and not only because they told me they too loved Gregory Alan Isakov. They were instantly so open and easy to talk to, in a way that invites being open in return. When it came time to discuss an engagement shoot, we decided on one of my favorite little towns and Independence Pass on the cusp of autumn. It was one beautiful and lovely afternoon. Especially with their sweet Forest who may have stolen the show a fair few times.

I say this quite often but I really do love stories. They inspire me. When my clients give me a glimpse into even a little bit of their stories, I can’t help but be interested in who they are. And I think, when we get to know people and have even a little understanding for where they came from and what they’ve seen, compassion for who they are comes along with no trouble at all.

My work wouldn’t be half what it was if I didn’t care about the people in front of my camera. And I’m grateful I have clients that trust me with their love stories and who they are as people so I can care about them as the unique humans they are.
